What a pilgrimage this turned out to be. As is common with many Sacred Sites, there are no sign posts to direct you along the way. Elfi and I initially started our pilgrimage (that’s what we called it, because it took us all day in the end to find the Dolmen) at Hardy’s monument. However it was many years since Elfi had tried to locate the Dolmen via this route and even then she had not been successful. As you can see from the photo, it was very foggy and as the day progressed and light began to fail, it got worse.
After several hours we decided to Google directions and when we discovered it would take 6 hours (then 6 hours back) we decided to abort that route, back track and take the car to Portesham where there seemed to be a quicker route.
To help those of you who would like to find the Dolmen, I am posting some photos with directions. It is not an easy route and we had to back track in many places because of barbed wire and electric fencing.
At Portesham coming in from Martinstown you need to park in the second road on the left. Sorry, the road is not named but I have taken a photo. (Don’t be fooled by parking in the road marked Helston)
Walk up the lane and you will come to a gate. Go through the gate (not the pathway to the right which we took and is not in the right direction!)
Carry along the track way keeping the fence to your left until you come to the top.
On the left you will find an open field bordered by a wall to the left. The first photo is the approach and the second photo is looking down so you can see the feint animal trackway that you need to take. What are we always told about energy lines? Follow the animal tracks.
You will come to a gate. Not easy to open and please remember to shut it. The gate borders a ploughed field.
Keep to the edge of the field with the wall to your left. You will, at this stage start to see the Dolmen over in the corner. But you need to go almost all the way round the ploughed field to exit it before you start your approach to the Dolmen. The first thing you will see over the wall to your right is the Sacred Spring.
Then further along is a gate in the wall which is firmly secured, but if you walk along further, next to the Dolmen, you will see there is a break in the fence and you can enter through there.
At last a well earned rest. Elfi and I spent a while here connecting with this special place.
Love and hugs
