In Search of Chapel Carn Brea 2/2/2025

This place had been on my “bucket list” since watching the Fisherman’s Friends film where it is mentioned in the song Cornwall My Home. “First thing in the morning on Chapel Carn Brae, to gaze at the Scillies in the blue far away”.  Well I couldn’t see the Scillies because of the weather, and there was no chapel.  But to me there was evidence of burial chambers which suggests it was inhabited by our Neolithic ancestors,  far earlier than any christian chapel.

It is easy to find.  On the A30 after Catchall and Boscowen Un stone circle, carry on towards Lands End and you will come to a village called Crows an Wra.  Take the road to the right, signposted Lands End Airport and the car park for Chapel Carn Brae is on your left.

Coming into Cornwall from the west, the hill is described as the first one in Cornwall.  The views must be magnificent on a sunny day, however, even on a cold windy day in February, one can see quite a distance.

You can see a late Neolithic entrance grave on the brow of the hill and of a type only found in Penwith and Scilly.

Even on a mizzly morning, the views were fabulous with views out towards Lands End and an outcrop with a small pool.

You can even see Lands End Airport below.

I managed to get some shelter out of the cold wind.

Perhaps I need to come back here, when the weather is not so inclement,  to gaze at the Scillies in the blue far away.

Blessings
